Part-time Leisure Courses

Welcome to our part-time courses for the autumn/winter season. Across the Hadlow Group, which comprises West Kent College, Ashford College and Hadlow College, there are many exciting opportunities for you, with courses designed to suit a range of interests and lifestyles. You'll be able to take up a new hobby, gain additional skills within an existing interest or study a more formal qualification for a potential career change.

Courses taking place at Ashford College:

Acrylic Nail Extensions

calendar Start Date: Monday, March 6th 2017 (10am-5pm)
time-duration Duration: 3 weeks

Discover how to work with acrylic nails including the filing, cuticle work, application of french tips and buffing to a shine.  Over the period of the three sessions you will develop your technique and learn about the Health and Safety requirements for working with acrylic nails.

Shellac Gel Nails

time-duration Duration: 1 week

Using a UV lamp, you will learn how to apply long-lasting polishes to nails with this one-day course.  You will cover the filing, cuticle work, buffing of the nail and application of the gel using a UV/LED lamp. 

Basic Nail Art

This introductory course will give you a step-by-step guide to painting techniques (including dotting, striping, glitters and application of diamante) as well as how to approach different designs. Covering both the theory and practical application you will also discover more about the Health and Safety practices needed.

Eyelash Extensions

Learn about the safe application of semi-permanent eye lash extensions with this three week course. You will cover the preparation of the eye, the assessment over what types of lashes are suitable for the client and the individual application of the lashes according to length, depth and width.

Eyebrow Definition

By the use of tinting, waxing and threading you will learn to create the ultimate definition and shape to the client's eyebrows.

Digital Photography

Explore how to make the most of your digital images. You will explore how to use the manual functions on your digital camera to get the best possible images, and how to edit photos using the latest Adobe Creative Cloud software.  Suitable for those with beginner or intermediate skills.

Introduction to Human Resource Practice

Have you thought of working as a Human Resource Practitioner? Do you want to know what is involved?

This course will give you an overview of the role of a practitioner and the responsibilities that it covers, including resourcing and talent planning, employee engagement, learning and development. As part of the course you will examine the function of the Human Resource department as a service provider and supporter of strategic objectives.

This course is the perfect introduction to the Level 3 CIPD Certificate in Human Resource Practice.

Garment Construction for Beginners

This course is designed to enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in your sewing skills to manufacture a simple garment.  Learn high quality construction methods used in the clothing industry. You will be shown basic construction methods, eg. seam finishes, sewing darts, fastenings and pressing

Some knowledge of garment construction/dressmaking would be an advantage but not essential.

Development of personal creative skills, opportunity to enrol onto Level 3 BTEC or a Foundation Degree course.

  • Week 1 - Introduction to  sewing equipment/ demonstrate and understand relevant techniques
  • Week 2 - Practical sewing skills for making seams and darts
  • Week 3 - Facings / bindings 
  • Week 5 - Fastenings / button stand 
  • Week 6 - Finishing 

Pattern Cutting for Beginners

For Students with an interest in Fashion and anyone wanting to know how to draft basic block for a simple Top and adapt to personalise own designs. Suitable for beginners or anyone wanting to further develop existing skills. Some knowledge of garment construction/dressmaking would be an advantage but not essential. Development of personal creative skills, opportunity to enrol onto Level 3 BTEC or a Foundation Degree course.

  • Week 1 - Pattern equipment and introduction to Pattern blocks /basic manipulation techniques
  • Week 2 - Drafting a bodice block
  • Week 3 - Dart manipulation
  • Week 5 - Button stand/ fastenings /facings
  • Week 6 - Collars

Music Technology – Audio Production

calendar Start Date: September 2017
time-duration Duration: 12 weeks at 2 and a half hours a week
basket Cost: £130

The course will enable the learners to study studio recording techniques and post-production processes including audio editing, mixing and mastering. The course will benefit learners new to the subject and those currently in employment in the industry who wish to enhance and update their skills and practice to meet the current industry standards. The college offers the use of our state-of-the-art recording studio and post-production equipment including, a 40 channel mixing console, the latest Apple Mac computers and audio production software and a large range of high quality microphones and instruments. You will also have the opportunity to work with external clients to gain real work experience.
